Larisa Montanaro, mezzo-soprano

Larisa Montanaro is a professional music-maker in Austin, Texas. Originally from New York, Larisa moved to Austin to study voice and composition at the University of Texas at Austin, where she specialized in avant-garde twentieth century vocal music and was a regular soloist with the New Music Ensemble and the Student Composer Series. In 1995, she began performing with the Early Music Ensemble and discovered that it too could be as weirdly wonderful as modern music. She completed her doctorate in Vocal Performance in 2004.

Larisa is a prolific composer of electronic music for the concert hall and for dance. Her solo works and collaborations have won awards, including the Russolo Prize in Italy and the Bourge in France, and her music has been performed throughout the world.

Now Larisa gets to do it all. She has a jazz combo and performs with the Dime Store Poets, the Rust Tones, Michelle Anthony, and Walter Tragert. From time to time you can also hear her at a UT New Music Ensemble concert, a TEMP concert, or at St. Mary’s Cathedral. She also teaches early childhood music at the Armstrong Music School, voice at Kids Acting, and maintains a private studio for all styles, but with a niche for pop artists and singer/songwriters.
